In Loving Memory of Kevin Penner
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Kevin Penner, a beloved volunteer and cherished member of the Central Valley Habitat for Humanity ReStore family. Kevin recently moved to Harrisonburg, VA, and quickly became an integral part of our team. He demonstrated a passion for giving back to the community, and his time with us was filled with dedication, enthusiasm, and kindness.

Volunteering was more than just an activity for Kevin; it was his way of contributing to a mission he truly believed in. His knowledge, generosity, and willingness to lend a helping hand left a lasting impact on all of us. Kevin found joy in not only helping others but in building relationships and forging connections with the ReStore family. Many hours were spent in conversation, laughter, and shared experiences.  We continually find ourselves reflecting on our conversations and time with Kevin.

Kevin was committed to making Harrisonburg feel like home and was actively seeking a sense of community and belonging. His passion for community and volunteerism was evident in every task he took on. Kevin was quick to identify areas of need and step up. During heavy snow events, he noticed our ReStore sandwich board sign by the highway had gotten dirty from plow debris and salt. Without hesitation, Kevin took cleaning supplies down to the road and, in just a few minutes, had our sign looking as good as new.

Kevin’s background in IT was especially helpful when processing donations of electronics or when the store had questions about networking devices. His expertise also came in handy when we had a recent influx of gaming tables, thanks to his knowledge of different types of card games. Here at the ReStore, we see items every day that bring back memories of Kevin, and we all wish we could have had more time with him.

Kevin truly loved volunteering at the ReStore, and his enthusiasm, reliability, and skill didn’t go unnoticed. He was encouraged to apply for a position with us, and we were excited to consider him for this opportunity. It’s a testament to the impact he made and the talents and skills that he possessed. His potential was limitless, and we are deeply saddened that he left us too soon.

In honor of Kevin’s memory, we will continue to fulfill our mission of keeping items out of the landfill, selling them at reasonable prices to raise money for affordable housing and critical home repair. And, will also continue to focus on another part of our mission, something that Kevin valued deeply—building community and hope. As we move forward, we remember that community and connection are something we all benefit from and need more of. We will honor Kevin’s legacy by embracing these values and carrying them forward in all that we do.
As we remember Kevin, we invite you to honor his memory through a donation to Central Valley Habitat for Humanity. Your contribution will not only pay tribute to his spirit of giving but also help continue the important work that Kevin was so proud to be a part of. Together, we can keep his passion for community alive.

Thank you for helping us celebrate the life of Kevin. He will be deeply missed, but his impact will not be forgotten.
